Sofia Airport is the most common gateway, roughly 165 km away with a drive time of around 2-2.5 hours thanks to the E-79 highway upgrade, which now runs largely on first-class roads. Options range from budget shuttle transfers to private door-to-door transfers and public buses.
Note: Generally Sofia Terminal 1 is for Wizz Air/EasyJet and Terminal 2 is for Ryanair/Bulgaria Air. For bus transfers, see the Buses & Coaches page. Click here for information about Sofia.
Thessaloniki Airport in northern Greece sits about 220-240 km from Bansko, a drive of roughly 3 hours. Since Greece and Bulgaria completed full Schengen membership and land border checks between the two countries ended in January 2025, the crossing is now noticeably quicker than older guides suggest, with no passport-control delays to budget for.
