Sofia Airport is the most common gateway, roughly 165 km away with a drive time of around 2-2.5 hours thanks to the E-79 highway upgrade, which now runs largely on first-class roads. Options range from budget shuttle transfers to private door-to-door transfers and public buses.

Thessaloniki Airport in northern Greece sits about 220-240 km from Bansko, a drive of roughly 3 hours. Since Greece and Bulgaria completed full Schengen membership and land border checks between the two countries ended in January 2025, the crossing is now noticeably quicker than older guides suggest, with no passport-control delays to budget for.

Alternatives

Plovdiv Airport, Bulgaria's second-largest, is actually a touch closer at around 148-161 km, with drive time of roughly 3.5 hours. It's a useful alternative when flights to Sofia are pricier or less convenient, particularly from certain European budget routes.

Skopje Airport in North Macedonia is the furthest of the four, around 224-240 km away with a journey of roughly 3.5 hours, often routed scenically past Rila Monastery. It tends to suit travelers combining a Balkans trip or those who find flights into Skopje cheaper or more direct.

Across all four, private and shared transfers are the most straightforward way in — most can be booked in advance for a fixed price with English-speaking drivers, door-to-door service, and flight tracking in case of delays. One added convenience for 2026: Bulgaria adopted the euro on January 1, so travelers from Thessaloniki no longer need to juggle a currency change on arrival.
